The FBI named Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, as the suspected shooter at the Butler, Pa., rally, which left one spectator dead and critically injured two others. Former president Donald Trump said he was shot in the ear.
MILWAUKEE – Late Saturday night, Neal Anderson sat at a bar a few blocks from the site of the upcoming Republican convention. Above him, two television screens were showing the shooting on repeat. “It makes my heart hurt for the country,” said Anderson, 48, who has voted Republican since 2012. “And I would feel the same way if it was on the other side.” Anderson lives in Superior, Wis., and had driven down to catch Saturday afternoon’s Milwaukee Brewers game.
Somewhere around the seventh inning, his cousin told him he needed to look at his phone. The game was “just meaningless” after that, Anderson said. “It was really hard to see an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate,” Anderson said. “It’s hard to comprehend how this could even happen.” Anderson already felt that Trump was going to win in November, particularly after President Biden’s debate performance.
