Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger said two people are dead, including an apparent shooter, after former president Donald Trump was rushed off the stage at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa. Trump is now safe, according to the Secret Service.

Melissa Shaffert, 51, an English teacher from Grove City, had been to a Trump rally in 2020 at the same location in Butler and found it “wonderful.” She told her boyfriend ahead of Saturday’s rally that it would be “a great experience.” Little did she know that violence would erupt. Normally, Shaffert carries a concealed firearm and knife with her everywhere, but she said she left the items at home Saturday because she knew security wouldn’t allow it.

I said: ‘Get your head down!’” In the chaos, Shaffert didn’t immediately see that Trump had been injured, nor did she realize others had been critically injured. People were laying on the ground in the baking heat to hide, she said. Then “everyone was staying calm and helping each other get up. People were like: ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?’” she said. She witnessed one injured man being carried away and attempted to live-stream her surroundings on her phone, she said.
