Visitors walk past a monument of the Ten Commandments outside the Capitol in Austin, Texas. Readers discuss the plan to place the Ten Commandments in Texas public schools.Re: “Commandments to be priority — Republicans want law requiring biblical text display in public school classrooms,” Jan. 2 Metro & Business story. The Ten Commandments are included in Jewish, Islamic and Christian religious texts.
Also, it sounds simple but in practice, it’s very difficult for most of us to treat others the way we would like to be treated all the time. What they really need to do is put it on a ballot, but of course they won’t do that because they would lose, and they know it.The laws proposed by state Sen. Phil King and Reps. Mike Olcott and Mitch Little are not about teaching children how to be moral citizens. They are a blatant, pro-Christian violation of the separation clause of the U.S. Constitution. It is an insult to the rest of the population that does not recognize Christianity as its guidepost.
Even if the Legislature deems this should be posted somewhere prominent, I don’t think it will make a difference for the majority of those in the hallways. It takes time to read, understand and absorb the Ten Commandments.Since the language is not one that is used today, I just don’t see a lot of people stopping to take the time. I see this more of a waste of precious school funding than a religious issue that will not be inclusive and could lead to further issues like bullying in schools.
