A display of fentanyl and meth that was seized by Customs and Border Protection officers at the Nogales Port of Entry, is shown during a media presentation in Nogales, Ariz. The cruelty and arbitrariness of drug sentencing in North Texas sickens me. Judges hand out sentences fit for unapologetic murderers like candy to people who didn’t hurt anyone. Even assault is a stretch, and that carries a much lower sentence.Alcohol kills four times as many people as meth.
The so-called drug war will never be mitigated until the obscene profits are taken out of its trafficking — profits so great that there is no risk too great to stop its commerce. And the only way to take the profits out of the illicit drug trafficking is to decriminalize it, regulate it and tax it, just as was done with alcohol in the early 1920s.
I suspect first-time drug offenders have never earned $40,000 per year. After 10-30 years in prison, they probably never will.Re: “Patrick paints target on THC — Lieutenant governor puts banning of products near top of legislative priorities,” Dec. 6 Metro & Business story.I was appalled at Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s proposal to totally ban THC.
Instead of banning THC, why not spend money on research and regulate the industry so that people can get the help they need without resorting to prescription drugs, whether it’s for pain, anxiety or sleep?I’d like to ask Dan Patrick if he learned nothing in his economics class? Demand drives supply. So long as people demand cannabis with THC, someone will supply it. Making it a crime will not make it vanish.
