Letters to the Editor

Kay McKinney, Dallas/Little Forest HillsNo sooner had I finished reading this editorial Tuesday morning, several drivers sped past me traveling south on Hillcrest early that afternoon. As they crested a hill south of Belt Line Road, a police officer waved one of them over to have a chat. What a coincidence!Re: “Texas GOP targets DHS — Threat to ‘defund’ follows criticism of cutting police funds,” Tuesday news story.

I wonder if this is just a reason to try to justify the escalation. It’s very hard to prove this, but it makes you wonder. Things to know when stopped by the police — when pulled over, do so on the shoulder of the roadway as soon as reasonably safe. Keep your hands on the steering wheel until the officer gives you instructions and then follow those instructions. If the encounter leads to your arrest, keep calm and follow directions. You do get a chance to call your attorney.

So many stories that involve the police report them using awful language to citizens. “Get out of the f---ing car,” Joshua Robbins apparently said to Charlea Cooper. Language like this never reduces stress, never de-escalates a situation. I don’t even think she did need to get out of the car. Is there a reason we cannot address each other civilly?Re: “The big story most people missed,” by Dave Lieber, Sunday Metro column.
