Re: “Keep College Polling Places — Proposal to ban voting centers at Texas universities is bad politics and discriminatory,” Wednesday editorial. Rep. Carrie...
Readers don’t like the bill aimed to ban voting on college campuses; discuss how taxes affect companies; explains the development process; and advocate for a four-day school week.
It’s politics, attempting to control who does and doesn’t vote. Instead of making the case to college students on why they should vote for them, politicians supporting this bill are trying to not allow them to vote and couching it in terms of safety. It’s just a bad idea, and I hope it gets voted down. And I hope we remember how it seems to be an attempt to basically rig the vote in their favor.Re: “Business taxes no burden,” by Bernard L. Weinstein, Tuesday Letters.
But if the tax is imposed only regionally and the business taxed is in competition to sell its products with other businesses that are located outside that region, then a heavy tax places a heavy burden on the company’s ability to compete for the consumer dollar. Regulated development processes are important to ensure safety, to manage the provision of utilities, to preserve quality of life and to attend to the competing interests of developers and residents. Fire and police protection, stormwater management, traffic flow and construction standards are critical components of responsible development in growing communities.
There are several compelling reasons to consider a four-day school week. One of the most significant benefits is that it can help alleviate the stress and burnout that many students and teachers experience in the current five-day model.
