Regarding the article on NEISD’s review of sex education curriculum, we’d like to set the record straight. As advocates for accurate information, it’s important to clarify that Healthy Futures of Texas is not an affiliate of an abortion provider, nor have we ever been. The allegations made during the recent SHAC meeting appear to be based on a misunderstanding of state law and our work. The use of our sexual health education curriculum does not violate any state code.
Healthy Futures encourages every school district to select accurate instructional materials that are a good fit for their community; address inequities in access to sexual health information; and promote parent and community member involvement. To improve adolescent health outcomes, these decisions must be made with a clear understanding of the facts.First it was banning books. Now it’s gutting sex education.
My first thought was to burn my diploma in protest at the next NEISD school board meeting. The board members shouldn’t be able to hide behind the School Health Advisory Committee. The board is ultimately responsible. Then I realized many of the board members didn’t have the benefit of a well-rounded education as I had. And now they are trying to force that same lack of a complete education on the kids they are responsible for in the district.
I recommend they take a weeklong retreat where they are taught the lessons of 1933 Germany. Many people my age remember being taught when the German government forced the people to think a certain way; where there was institutionalized hatred of those that were different. This eventually led to the mass elimination of those who were different.
No one ever became a genius after reading a book about Einstein, and no kid will become gay or transgender or Black or white or Jewish, etc., just from reading books. But they just might develop empathy, a trait Jesus had in abundance.
