Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he looks forward to pardoning an Army sergeant who was convicted of murder in the shooting death of an armed protester in 2020. Readers are shocked.Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is promising to pardon a convicted murderer solely for political gain. That should alarm and distress anyone who cares about democracy or the rule of law. Even worse, as a former attorney general and Texas Supreme Court justice, Abbott must know what he is doing is reckless and irresponsible.
Sgt. Daniel Perry was only convicted on April 7. He has not had a sentencing hearing, during which he might make his case for leniency. He has filed no post-verdict motions challenging his conviction, much less submitted a clemency petition making the case for a pardon. In fact, Abbott does not even have a transcript of Perry’s trial from which he might identify some miscarriage of justice.
Every Texan should be concerned. If Abbott will promise to pardon a convicted murderer for political advantage, there is no one who needs to fear law enforcement or prosecution so long as their misconduct favors Abbott’s power-hungry ambitions.I’m trying to understand why Gov. Greg Abbott is so eager to pardon the Army sergeant who was convicted of murder by a jury of his peers. Murder! Also, the protester was legally carrying the gun that so many of our Texas Republicans are so very proud of.
What have we done to deserve the likes of Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Sen. Ted Cruz and others? Do they really represent the Texas voters? If so, we are in trouble.
