The Rev. Herman Price Jr. leads a ministry of community service at St. John Baptist Church, responding to a need “for more light to shine in dark places.”
Every second Saturday, before sunrise, long lines of vehicles form at St. John Baptist Church . It’s early enough to see the blur of deer darting past new housing construction nearby. By 6 a.m., more than 30 volunteers, from youngsters to retirees, are stationed at food pickup points and storage tents outside the chapel in Leon Valley , where the Rev. Herman Price Jr. leads the distribution of food. He waves each driver forward along winding orange-and-white-striped cones.
Secret sauce, still in the family and still a secret, came from many places “Out here in the suburbs, we see families still need help,” Price said. “It’s a real problem. There are families hurting all over San Antonio. This is just one way we get to demonstrate the love of God.” In the St. John sanctuary, he recently huddled with Percy Edwards, 57, a congregation member and youth outreach mentor, to go over church humanitarian efforts.
‘This is like my chosen familia’: The gospel according to Taco Church Price grew up in New Orleans, where he became a disciple of scripture and the gospel. In 1974, he enlisted in the Air Force. He retired as a master sergeant after 20 years in the service. His next assignment — leading the St. John congregation and its community ministry.
Air Force ‘top’ had an artist’s eye and talent. Now his work is all over the country. During the food distributions, Edwards oversees traffic in the overflowing parking lot. Cars line up 10 in a row. Before the morning ended at a recent one, he’d helped a visitor jump a dead battery. “What I get out of this the most is seeing the recipients’ faces,” Edwards said. “They’re very gracious and appreciative of what we’re doing.
