Former San Antonio poet laureate Nephtalí De León is suing the city and the head of its Department of Arts & Culture over his firing last August. De León was four months into his term when he was removed from the post following a dispute over a word he included in a poem he posted to his Facebook page on Aug. 1, 2023. Comments on the post indicated the word, a Chicano term for “black,” had an offensive connotation for some readers.
