The social media app Lemon8, owned by ByteDance, is gaining traction as a possible alternative to TikTok in the U.S. as a ban on the latter hangs in the balance.
The social media app Lemon8 has gained attention as a potential U.S. ban looms over TikTok. The threat of TikTok's ban stems from a law signed last year by President Biden, which aims to ban the popular platform in the U.S. on January 19 if ByteDance doesn't divest. Oral arguments in a case concerning the potential ban are expected to be presented to the Supreme Court on Friday. Both social media apps are owned by Chinese tech company ByteDance.
Lemon8 has been available for over four years and operates in multiple countries, including Japan, where it originated, and the U.S., where it launched in early 2023. The app allows users to discover and share content related to beauty, fashion, travel, and more, featuring creative tools, collages, filters, effects, stickers, and text templates. It integrates with TikTok, enabling users to have a single account for both platforms. Some of Lemon8's interfaces resemble Instagram and Pinterest. FOX Business reached out to ByteDance for comment on whether Lemon8 could be affected by the law being reviewed by the Supreme Court. The law targets websites and apps operated, directly or indirectly, by ByteDance, TikTok, and subsidiaries. Lemon8 is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play in the U.S., with 4.5-star and 3.8-star ratings, respectively. ByteDance also owns other apps like CapCut, Lark, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Over 170 million people in the U.S. use TikTok. ByteDance was founded in 2012, with co-founders Zhang Yiming and Liango Rubo being billionaires with a net worth of $45.6 billion and $2.2 billion, respectively, according to Forbes
