Lemon8, a social media app owned by ByteDance, is gaining traction as a potential alternative to TikTok in the U.S. amid ongoing legal challenges to TikTok's operations.

The social media app Lemon8 has been gaining attention as a potential U.S. ban looms over TikTok. This threat comes from a law signed last year by President Biden, aiming to ban the popular platform in the U.S. on January 19th if ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, doesn't divest. Oral arguments in a case concerning the potential ban are expected to be presented to the Supreme Court on Friday. Both Lemon8 and TikTok belong to Chinese tech giant ByteDance.

Lemon8 has been around for over four years and is available in multiple countries, including Japan, where it originated, and the U.S., where it launched in early 2023. The app allows users to discover and share content related to beauty, fashion, travel, and more, featuring creative tools, collages, filters, effects, stickers, and text templates. It integrates with TikTok, enabling users to have a single account for both platforms, a feature introduced in November. Lemon8's interfaces share similarities with Instagram and Pinterest. FOX Business reached out to ByteDance for comment on whether Lemon8 could be affected by the law pending before the Supreme Court. The law targets websites and apps 'operated, directly or indirectly' by ByteDance, TikTok, and its subsidiaries. Lemon8 is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play in the U.S., with a 4.5-star rating on the App Store and a 3.8-star rating on Google Play. ByteDance also owns other apps like CapCut, Lark, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Over 170 million people in the U.S. use TikTok. Founded in 2012, ByteDance was co-founded by billionaires Zhang Yiming and Liango Rubo, with estimated net worths of $45.6 billion and $2.2 billion respectively, according to Forbes
