Considered dispassionate about the game, aloof and self-centered by some in his native Mexico, Vela has flourished in MLS and has his club playing for the CONCACAF Champions League title this week.
Considered one of soccer’s silkiest left-footed scorers for well over a decade, the 34-year-old captain of the Los Angeles Football Club isn’t one to deliver cheap shots even if he sounds increasingly like an athlete capable of doing whatever it takes to win.
Vela and his teammates vowed to reach the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League final after losing late in the championship of 2020 continental competition. Now in his sixth year with Major League Soccer, the on-field face of LAFC has been inseparable from the club’s efforts – to a degree that opposing coaches who felt the brunt of LAFC’s competitive wrath this year have labeled them the best team in North America and the MLS.
“Carlos knows not only about finals. He knows a lot about football,” said midfielder Timothy Tillman, who is in his first year of playing with Vela. “He helps us in every single second out here not only on the training pitch but also outside any time you want to know anything you ask him. He’s a great captain.”
Dispatching a Liga MX club in the process would simply add a sheen to Vela’s late-in-life competitive success, one that is likely to continue to distract Mexican soccer watchers who regard one of their nation’s most prolific talents as something less than how he is regarded in L.A.
