When Lamar Odom was found unconscious at a Las Vegas brothel in October 2015, his inner circle was forced into action. “He had a lot of brain damage on the left side of his body, and his lungs collapsed,” Khloé Kardashian, who was legally married to Odom at the time, said in Netflix’s Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom.
“They were like, ‘This surgery, there’s, like, a 10 percent chance it will work, or he might die on the table.’” Kardashian, 41, who withdrew her divorce petition from Odom, 46, amid the health scare, consulted with one of the former NBA star’s teammates. “Kobe Bryant was there and he helped me make the decision of doing the surgery,” Kardashian revealed. Odom and Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in 2020, played together on the Los Angeles Lakers from 2004 to 2011. Odom was in a coma for days at a Las Vegas hospital and suffered 12 strokes and six heart attacks, according to his son Lamar Jr., who participated in the documentary. During that period, visitation rights became contentious between Kardashian and Odom’s first wife, Liza Morales. “Some people got to see him, some people didn’t,” Morales, 46, said in Untold. “We didn’t have control over that. Khloé had control over that.”“I had filters on who I would let into the hospital, that’s very true,” she said.” Kardashian added, “At the very beginning, I would let people come in. And then I found out that three of them were drug dealers that were wanting to collect money, rummaging through his personal bags. When that happened is when I said, ‘We’re on lockdown. Whoever wants to come, I need to authorize them being here.’” Morales said the heightened protocol got awkward when she and Odom’s family had a run-in with Kardashian’s famous mom. “We were coming out of the elevator, the whole family was with me. Kris Jenner’s bodyguard was like, ‘Before you come onto this floor, you guys gotta sign this ,’” Morales recalled. “I was looking at him and he was like, ‘Not you.’”“It got so bad that somebody must have told the cops because Vegas PD came upstairs with five cops, two German shepherds. It was very intimidating,” Morales added. “I think it was to keep the peace, but it made it worse. Kind of triggering.” When Odom eventually awoke from his coma, he remembered “ripping tubes and s*** out of my neck” before being moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Odom admitted the early recovery journey wasn’t for the faint of heart, as he would often lose control of his bowels. Kardashian acknowledged the journey was difficult, but it didn’t stop her from showing up. “I never left the hospital,” she said. “I was there for about four months with him, every single day. We were determined to get him walking and moving again.” Odom was discharged from the hospital in January 2016. Kardashian filed for divorce again in May 2016, with the divorce being finalized in December 2016.
