Residents of Reeves County southwest of Odessa are seeking answers from the state regulators about the blowout’s impact on their health and environment.
A tower of saltwater and poisonous hydrogen sulfide gas that plagued Reeves County for nearly three weeks has stopped flowing but area residents are still seeking answers about its impact on their environment. Houston -based Kinder Morgan Inc. said Tuesday it sealed the hemorrhaging well in West Texas 19 days after it exploded Oct. 2. The well is five miles west of Toyah , a town of 61 in Reeves County . The company said work remains to fill and plug the well with cement.
Mysterious 100-foot geyser of salty water erupts in West Texas oilfield hit by recent earthquakes Kinder Morgan workers dug pits to pool the water. The next step was trucking it away, but where they took the water was not immediately clear. The company said the liquid that burst out of the well was produced water, a brine laden with chemicals it picks up underground. Produced water is a byproduct of fracking for oil.
said their Midland Region conducted air monitoring using handheld equipment that provided instantaneous readings in the field, responding to residential complaints. “There were no detections,” said agency spokesperson Victoria Cann. “
