The Alaska DOT closes Thane Road in Juneau for a second day as avalanche danger continues
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Thane Road in Juneau has reopened following a nearly two-day long closure after an avalanche came down close to the road Tuesday. The avalanche was captured by a DOT camera showing a huge powder cloud roaring down the mountain.
DOT Spokesperson Sonny Mauricio said conditions on Wednesday were still considered hazardous. “At the ridgetop we are seeing 50 mile per hour winds with gusts up to 95 miles per hour moving a lot of snow around,” Mauricio said. “Historically, you see larger natural avalanches occur with continuous conditions like that.” Mauricio said the DOT plans to do avalanche hazard mitigation work Thursday, provided the winds die down as expected. There are no homes along the avalanche path on Thane Road but that is not the case in another part of town where homes sit directly in the Behrends avalanche path on Mount Juneau.
