A Prichard teenager who turned himself in after a 10-day search following his younger brother’s shooting death will be jailed without bail for now, a judge ruled Wednesday.

The 16-year-old defendant, whose name has been withheld because of his age, is charged as an adult with. Prosecutors allege that he fatally shot his 12-year-old brother at their home on Snyder Drive on Aug. 11.

“This is certainly a tragic situation for that family,” he said outside the courtroom. “You have a 16-year-old defendant charged for manslaughter in the shooting death of his 12-year-old sibling. Can’t imagine what this family is going through. My heart goes out to them. You know, however, at the same time, we have to uphold the law. And we are gonna prosecute this case as long as the law allows.”

After the arraignment Thursday, the teenage defendant will have an opportunity for a preliminary hearing, in which prosecutors will have to demonstrate that they sufficient evidence to move the case forward. Then, a grand jury would decide whether to indict him.
