Duke’s Jon Scheyer broke his silence on North Carolina’s decision to fire head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons.

Earlier this week, the North Carolina Tar Heels made the decision to fire head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons with the program, following the team’s first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament. Reacting to the somewhat surprising — yet not entirely unexpected — news was one of North Carolina’s biggest rivals, Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer, who spoke to the media on Saturday ahead of Duke’s Elite Eight matchup against the Connecticut Huskies.

, Scheyer said he has a lot of “empathy” for coaches like Davis who have lost their jobs, adding that being a head coach at that level is a “fragile and delicate” situation. Both Scheyer and Davis took over their first head coaching roles just one year apart, and both succeeded legendary figures. Davis replaced Roy Williams following his retirement, while Scheyer was handed the reins from Mike Krzyzewski. While there is an age gap between the two — Davis is 55 and Scheyer is 38 — their paths to becoming head coaches were not all that different. They’ve also had plenty of battles over the past few seasons, facing off twice a year in the regular season along with postseason matchups. Scheyer has held the upper hand in the rivalry, owning a 6–3 record against Davis. However, the two split their matchups this season, with North Carolina hitting a game-winner in Chapel Hill on Feb. 7.
