What's worse than blowing one strikeout call? Missing two in a row. An MLB umpire was humiliated Saturday by the new ABS system.

season until Bucknor is behind a catcher, does an emphatic strikeout call, and the hitter looks at the umpire like he's on a different planet and argues that the official was wrong. Before, the most a hitter could do was kick some dirt at the umpire and yell a little before getting warned.

That was the past, though, as 2026 marks a new dawn for baseball in North America with the Automated Ball-Strike system. Now, each team has two challenges per game , where pitchers, catchers, and batters can defy the umpire's final judgment to see if they truly made the right call. On Saturday, the ABS system was on full display in a game between the Boston Red Sox visiting the Cincinnati Reds. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Bucknor excitedly called strike three against new Reds' hitter Eugenio Suarez to end the inning. The crowd booed, but unlike before, when Suarez had no power, this time he tapped his helmet and prompted an official to issue a challenge. A few seconds later, ABS showed on the videoboard at Great American Ball Park that Bucknor was wrong and that Suarez would continue his at-bat. The Reds faithful cheered, and Suarez smiled seeing the result. The very next pitch, Bucknor, like it was a replay, once again called Suarez looking at a third strike to end the inning. And for the second time in less than two minutes, the videoboard showed Bucknor being wrong again, sending the Reds crowd into a frenzy. Although we are only a few short days into the 2026 MLB season, the ABS system is already a hit with fans in attendance and watching from home.
