Despite reporting that hybrid-electric vehicles will return, the English automaker said battery-electric power is its only way forward.
Jaguar has been in the midst of a complete corporate overhaul since the beginning of 2025, when the storied English automaker revealed its highly controversial Type 00 concept and vowed to dedicate itself to an all-electric future.
One year later, Jaguar finds itself in the position of strongly defending this decision—especially after a weekend report from British newspaper The Times of London suggested the automaker was exploring the idea of ditching its pure-EV plans and reconsidering hybrid vehicles.The English paper claimed Jaguar is exploring the development of a partially-gas-powered vehicle under a secret initiative to ease potential worries about driving range. The report cites internal sources at Jaguar Land Rover who said the range-extended electric vehicle model would be capable of going up to 621 miles without stopping thanks to its internal combustion addition. However, JLR has vehemently denied these claims, both in public statements and even in anonymously sourced statements. 'Our plans to reinvent Jaguar as an electric-only luxury automotive brand are unchanged. We are looking forward to unveiling the first new electric Jaguar later this year,' a JLR spokesperson said to Autocar. A similar statement was also issued to Automotive News. An anonymous source at the company went further with Autocar, however, calling The Times report 'rubbish.'Automotive News affirmed that the previously promised plans are indeed moving forward. These plans reportedly include three new high-performance EVs, the first of which is set to arrive in March or April of 2026. The initial vehicle is said to be a brutalist-looking, 1030-hp four-door grand tourer—a prototype of which we've already ridden in.Jaguar engineers have previously explained that the Jaguar Electric Architecture set to underpin these models is not easily adaptable to a a range-extender combustion engine due to battery packaging constraints. Our ride in the prototype model revealed a 120-kWh- capacity battery-electric powertrain capable of an estimated 400 miles of EPA-rated range. The vehicle also uses standard air springs and adaptive dampers, as Jaguar engineers told us their dynamic goals centered around a plush ride and acceptable roll characteristics. Modern camera technologu has seemingly eliminated the need for a rear window, as seen with the Polestar 4, and the prototype Jaguar is just the latest example of this quirk. The target price is expected to be £120,000 .Jaguar's all-electric crusade is part of an initiative to compete more closely with Bentley, offering a battery-electric alternative to that ultra-luxury brand. The other two high-performance electric vehicles in the works are rumored to be an SUV and either a sports car or a large luxury sedan; these should arrive sometime between 2027 and 2030, but Jaguar has been more coy about these models. Either way, it seems imperative that Jaguar get back to selling cars soon; the brand has halted production entirely as it retools factories and finalizes preparations for the all-electric future.
