We run our eye over every match-up in the round of 16 and who to look out for as the tournament edges towards the pointy end.
While South Africa have qualified for the knockouts at their second World Cup, it’s all uphill from here. The Netherlands, even without injured record scorer Vivianne Miedema , are still the 2019 runners-up and have just broken Vietnam’s hearts to the tune of 7-0 and drawn 1-1 with reigning champions the United States.
England made it hard for themselves in their opening two games, with a nervy 1-0 wins over Haiti and Denmark. It took until their third outing – a 6-0 defeat of China – to hit their stride. Which is good timing for Sarina Wiegman’s European champions given they’re about to play a Nigerian team that has been a thorn in the side of their Group B opponents. That includes Australia, who were beaten 3-2 by the 40th-ranked Africans, and Canada and Ireland, who were both held to draws.
Linda Caicedo – Colombia; Sophia Smith – United States ; Rosella Ayane – Morocco ; Khadija Shaw – Jamaica ; Lauren James – England.
