A lot is at stake for the Giants in this year's draft.
New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen and co-owner John Mara are facing a huge draft.at No. 3, they could trade up from No. 34 and get their potential franchise quarterback near the bottom of Round 1.
. But nailing a quarterback pick goes a long way toward making it happen. So is this finally the draft that turns the Giants into a contender again? It’s been a long time since they could truly call themselves that. They’ve mostly been a disaster in the 13-season stretch since their most recent Super Bowl title, after the 2011 season. By now, you know the grim ledger — two playoff trips, one playoff win and nine seasons with double-digit losses . But again, the right quarterback can make a huge difference. Since the Giants made Eli Manning the de facto No. 4 pick in 2004, they have drafted one quarterback above Round 3 — Jones . They picked Dave Brown in the first round of the 1992 supplemental draft . Other than Jones, Manning and Brown, they haven’t picked a quarterback above Round 3 since they took Phil Simms seventh in 1979. At No. 3, Sanders would be their highest-drafted quarterback ever — and just the eighth quarterback they’ve ever picked in the first two rounds. In addition to Jones, Manning , Brown and Simms, there were three such picks in the 1950s. In 1950, the Giants took Travis Tidwell seventh overall. Nine years later, they selected Lee Grosscup 10th. And in 1953, they got Eddie Crowder in Round 2 . Tidwell started four games in two seasons with the Giants. Grosscup also lasted just two years with them .
