The news that Massmart will soon ‘pilot’ mini Makro stores as effective replacements for Game outlets in malls ought not to be surprising.
Merchandising has improved, but there are still many, many things that don’t make sense. A few random racks of clothing taking up valuable space at the entrance, for instance … Its ecommerce experience is nowhere close to as slick as that of Takealot, but Walmart has been pouring tons of time, effort and money into getting this right.The SA market remains the most sizeable on the continent, and the online/mobile sales portion of that will continue to grow. There are billions of rands of sales at stake, and this is a part of the market that is growing.
Getting the exact mix right is going to be critical. In its previous effort , it simply didn’t get the assortment spot on. For now, its footprint remains somewhat limited . The model relies on fulfilment hubs , but there has been a steady shift to include some Makro stores in this.
