Invincible creator Robert Kirkman hints at more changes from the comics as the Invincible TV series continues to expand beyond its source material. Invincible season 4 is soaring to great reviews, and the writing for season 5 is almost complete.

Prime Video's adult animated superhero series is known for its graphic violence, mature themes, and its faithfulness to the original comic books. In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for Invincible season 4, Robert Kirkman hinted at new storylines and different characters, among other developments. When asked about adding new elements to the show, he offered insights into what viewers can expect, specifically for the TV series. Check out Kirkman's comments below: Yeah, from time to time. I think it's a great opportunity to be able to put something new in the show that's unique to the show. Anyone familiar with the comic that's watching a TV show can still experience that new feeling and feel the surprise of something that you can't predict, and you have no idea how the story's going to go. And we had a lot of fun with that storyline. So it's something that we hope to be able to do more and more as time goes on. It introduces a new villain and keeps Invincible's biggest storyline in season 4 going. In the beginning of the Invincible comics , similar to the show, Nolan kills Earth's heroes, the Guardians of the Globe, and he reveals the Viltrumite conquest mission. Characters in the TV series reflect their comic versions, but some characters are changed slightly to "bring more representation into it." Although Mark's race is never explicitly stated in the comics, the show has made notable changes to its characters. For instance, Mark is biracial, and his mother, Debbie, is Korean American. His girlfriend, Amber, is Black, and Green Ghost and Shrinking Rae, who were originally written as men, are now female in Invincible. These updates reflect new elements while staying rooted in the core story. The show stays rooted in the comics, but when Kirkman was asked about creating characters' original storylines, and if it impacts or influences the greater common conflict that the show is building towards, possibly veering off course, Kirkman said: Well, the real sweet spot is when you find out that it's additive. I think that, thematically, that Darkblood story falling where it falls does a lot of work with Mark's character and sets up a lot of things about where he is and what his mindset is moving into the Viltrumite War. And it's not so much a detour as it is actually a little bit of spice that's thrown on the story that really does kind of help it hold together and push you in some very useful directions story-wise. So in adding more things like this and doing more new storylines, it's always about finding that little bit of the story that can accentuate what we already have and clarify what we already have and make it all work a little bit better. Appearing in season 1 and briefly in the comics, Damien Darkblood, a demon detective, will play a much larger role in season 4. Originally, he was tasked with investigating Omni-Man for the deaths of the Guardians of the Globe. In the comics, Darkblood never goes to Hell, but according to Kirkman, the storyline is one he planned but never did. This suggests that many characters could have a potential journey to Hell, fulfilling that unused idea. It goes to show that Invincible is concerned with staying true to its source material, but Kirkman also admits, "There’s some big changes that I think are really going to surprise people… in a good way” . The comics are finished, with 144 total issues, ranging from 2003 to 2018, and have a full, definitive ending. Kirkman's comments assure viewers that any changes are intentional and not deviations from the story. Faithful comic readers can't predict the show anymore, and that's part of what Kirkman and the producers want. 193 8.9/10 8/10 Invincible 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Animation Adventure Action Superhero Release Date March 26, 2021 Network Amazon Prime Video Showrunner Robert Kirkman, Simon Racioppa Writers Robert Kirkman Franchise Invincible Cast See All
