Invasive apple snails and giant salvina threaten the San Antonio River and River Walk, and they could be in crawfish boil bags, Texas Parks and Wildlife says.
If you’re planning a crawfish boil anytime soon, Texas Parks and Wildlife is warning you to check your crawfish bag for two invasive hitchhikers that could drastically alter the environment if released. One of them has already invaded the San Antonio River Walk . Apple snails and giant salvina, a type of free-floating aquatic fern, have been spotted in some states in crawfish bags purchased from Louisiana . Apple snails have already made their way to other states such as Arkansas .

Now you can follow the San Antonio River’s battle against them online Apple snails may also host a type of rat lungworm, angiostrongylus cantonesis, a parasite that can infect mammals, including humans, according to the Texas invasive species website. Humans can become infected by this parasite by eating raw or undercooked snails or by eating raw produce contaminated by rat lungworm larvae.
