A 52-year-old man with multiple prior deportations was arrested by ICE and local authorities in Houston for aggravated assault, highlighting the ongoing issue of criminal aliens re-entering the U.S. after deportation.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office apprehended a 3-time previously deported criminal alien on February 5th. The suspect, David Gonzalez-Martinez, 52, was wanted in Harris County, Texas, for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Gonzalez-Martinez was taken into custody during routine daily operations in Houston and subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail.

Following his arrest, ICE placed an immigration detainer with the jail, formally requesting notification if Gonzalez-Martinez is to be released back into the community. Gonzalez-Martinez has illegally entered the United States at least four times. He was previously deported to Mexico by U.S. immigration officials in September 2001, July 2008, and April 2015. While residing in the U.S. illegally, Gonzalez-Martinez has accumulated several criminal convictions, including voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault with a weapon, possession of marijuana, and illegal re-entry. 'Immigration detainers are one of the most indispensable resources in the ICE officer’s toolbox,' stated ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston Field Office Director Bret Bradford. 'They enable our officers to take direct custody of criminal aliens in the safe confines of the jail, which enhances the safety of everyone involved, and helps to eliminate unnecessary spending that would otherwise be required to go out and search for them in the community.' Bradford further emphasized, 'Violent criminal aliens like this individual who violate our nation’s system of laws with impunity are a direct threat to the safety of our communities. That danger is not lost on our officers who live and raise families in the Houston area. As a result, they are out in the field every day putting their lives on the line to track down dangerous criminal aliens and restore law and order in our communities.
