Lorain County Sheriff Jack Hall clarifies stance on immigrant deportations.

Rodger Roeser, special to cleveland.comThe Lorain County Sheriff’s Office will not be traversing Lorain County and rounding up illegal immigrants. This is not in defiance of any new policies or orders from any newly elected Federal officials or Federal agencies. And Lorain County residents, and residents throughout the country alike are desperately in need of basic civics lessons, says newly elected Lorain County Sheriff Jack Hall.

“No law enforcement officer, other than those agents who work for ICE have the ability to enforce the action because they are not warrants, so they’re not even criminal charges – they are civil actions,” Sheriff Hall explained. A local sheriff, any county sheriff anywhere in the United States cannot just go in and start arresting illegal immigrants.

If ICE were to provide the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department a warrant for criminal arrest, that warrant is put in from of the Lorain County Clerk of Courts for the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas, and once it is recognized, the sheriff can then execute and serve that warrant. And, once arrested, the suspect would be taken to the county jail – exactly like any other criminal suspect.

And, Sheriff Hall said he has been in numerous conversations with ICE officials this week. A hotline number is being set up for all law enforcement agencies throughout Lorain County to confirm the status of any immigration detainers, and local law enforcement can contact ICE director for rapid confirmation.
