Ex-pub manager Spike says running food banks is 'more fulfilling than pouring pints'

A Leeds ex-pub manager swapped running seven boozers for seven food banks - and says it’s been “more fulfilling than pouring pints”.

Spike has spoken about the cross-overs from the pub trade to food banks and how his background has helped, bumping into ex-punters now working alongside him as volunteers, and a series of touching stories about people struggling in Leeds. Spike says he’s bumped into old regulars at the various pubs he’s worked now volunteering at the food banks, which tend to operate out of churches and community centres. He says the pubs he managed also served as community hubs so there has been a lot of crossover.

The operations manager says the job can get emotional and it really touches him when he’s able to make a difference to somebody's life as a “gateway to them progressing”. He recounted how an old man once visited the food bank after isolating himself at home and in turn, struggling to afford the bills.
