Florida's governor has declared a state of emergency with Dorian expected to bear down on its eastern coast later in the weekend or early next week
By Arian Campo-Flores and Talal Ansari Updated Aug. 29, 2019 11:20 pm ET MIAMI—Florida residents across the state began preparing for Hurricane Dorian as it strengthens into a potential Category 4 storm with a path that has proved difficult for forecasters to predict.
Dorian is expected to become a major hurricane on Friday and to remain “extremely dangerous” until it makes landfall, according to the hurricane center. It is forecast to unleash potentially deadly storm surges. Rainfall totals could reach 5 inches in portions of the Bahamas and 10 inches in the southeastern U.S., with isolated instances as high as 15 inches.
Mr. DeSantis visited the Brevard County Emergency Operations Center and reiterated his earlier warnings, adding that one of the most challenging aspects in the state’s preparation was the uncertainty of where Dorian would make landfall. He said he hoped to better deploy assets to help in recovery once there was a more narrow prediction.
Mr. Trump urged residents in a tweet Thursday to “be prepared and please follow State and Federal instructions, it will be a very big Hurricane, perhaps one of the biggest!” Some cruise operators were forced to evacuate privately held islets and change itineraries in the next couple of days. Royal Caribbean International , the world’s biggest cruise-line, is evacuating 400 residents from its privately held CocoCay Caribbean island and rerouting four ships. Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line also canceled trips or rerouted ships.
