Dorian strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday shortly before it arrived at the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.
Hurricane Dorian is likely to strengthen into a"major hurricane" during the next couple of days as it moves northwest over the Atlantic Ocean in the direction of the U.S. mainland, forecasters said.
Dorian strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane—wind speeds of between 74 and 95 miles per hour—on Wednesday shortly before it arrived at the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, where it caused power outages and minor flooding,The storm also passed by Puerto Rico, although it caused relatively little damage as the territory avoided a direct hit—although minor fooding and power outages were also reported on the islands of Vieques and Culebra.
"Maximum sustained winds are near 85 miles per hour with higher gusts," the statement read."Strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Dorian is expected to become a major hurricane on Friday." The NHC says that there is a risk of dangerous storm surges later this week in the central and northwestern Bahamas, and along the east coast of Florida as Dorian advances.
