Border czar Tom Homan says 700 federal agents are being pulled from Minnesota. State and local leaders say the Trump administration needs to go further.

have been at the forefront of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown as federal law-enforcement flooded in and clashed with demonstrators who contested their aggressive tactics against undocumented and citizen residents alike.

But in the aftermath of the killing ofappeared ready for a change of topic, directing a leadership shift on the ground and signaling a possible shift in approach.that the administration would begin a drawdown of federal agents in Minnesota, recalling 700 officers “effective immediately.” Per Homan, the number includes members of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He said that about 2,000 agents will remain in Minnesota, a sizable figure in comparison to the 150 agents assigned to the state prior to the operation. Homan attributed the shift to increased collaboration with local officials and law enforcement, particularly noting more coordination between county jails and ICE for custody transfers of undocumented detainees. Homan indicated that the goal was to eventually return Minnesota to its pre-operation numbers, albeit with a “but.” “My goal, with the support of President Trump, is to achieve a full drawdown and end this surge as soon as we can,” Homan said. “But that is largely contingent upon the end of the illegal and threatening activities against ICE and its federal partners that we’re seeing in the community.” In the aftermath of Alex Pretti’s death, Trump sent Homan to take over the administration’s operation in the state from then Border Patrol commander-in-large, whose “turn and burn” aggressive approach and high profile had finally become a political liability for Trump. The border czar soon met with Minnesota governor, both of whom Trump and his allies had repeatedly blamed for the unrest in the state and for the widespread opposition to ICE. Homan appeared to attribute these talks to Wednesday’s drawdown, saying he had “frank, honest discussions” with them and state attorney general Keith Ellison. “We don’t agree on everything, but we agree on the need for public safety and we do agree that ICE has a role to enforce the immigration laws of this country,” Homan said. While it remains to be seen what the purported drawdown will look like in practice, Walz and Frey are making it clear the federal government needs to go further. The governorthe announcement a “step in the right direction” but said Minnesota needs “a faster and larger drawdown of forces, state-led investigations into the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, and an end to this campaign of retribution.”“My message to the White House has been consistent — Operation Metro Surge has been catastrophic for our residents and businesses. It needs to end immediately,” he said in a, Trump confirmed that he directed the drawdown in Minnesota and said his administration could use a “softer touch” when dealing with immigration. “I learned that maybe we could use a little bit of a softer touch. But you still have to be tough,” the president said. “We’re dealing with really hard criminals.”Manage preferences. The latest Epstein files include unverified sexual assault claims against Trump, among thousands of other mentions.
