Work on widening Highway 59 through Gulf Shores is progressing well and is expected to be completed several months ahead of schedule. Construction was temporarily halted last year due to a contractor buyout, but the new contractor, Sawgrass Construction, has made significant progress. The project aims to create three southbound lanes between the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge and Fort Morgan Road, with the section south of the bridge targeted for completion by Memorial Day 2025. The project is funded through a federal grant and lodging tax revenues.

) - Work to widen Highway 59 through Gulf Shores is well into its second year and while there was a period of stoppage in work, city leaders said everything is back on pace and actually ahead of schedule.

“Wiregrass Construction bought out John G. Walton and we met with Wiregrass as soon as they came on board and they’ve really been a great partner, helping us push construction along and there’s been a lot more progress these past few months,” said Capital Projects Director for the City of Gulf Shores, Clint Colvin.

“So, the big push right now is south of the Intracoastal Waterway and we are pushing to get that done and completely open by Memorial Day when the big traffic starts hitting town,” Colvin explained.
