Henry Cavill smiles off to the side in a red carpet photo
It does not take much for a Game of Thrones casting rumor to catch fire. Throw in a massive fantasy franchise, a fan-favorite actor, and one slightly confusing convention moment, and the internet will do the rest.
That is basically what happened with Henry Cavill and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as fans briefly convinced themselves that the former Witcher star was secretly on his way to Westeros. It was one of those rumors that felt just believable enough to spread fast. But that idea has now been shut down pretty clearly. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms star Peter Claffey has once again confirmed that Cavill is not joining the HBO fantasy series for Season 2. The actor had already tried to kill the rumor back in February, writing on Instagram Stories, “Just to clarify, the thing Dex was referring to in the interview had nothing to do with Henry Cavill coming into the show or the GOT universe . Complete misunderstanding.” That should have ended it, but the confusion kept hanging around, so Claffey addressed it again at Dublin Comic Con alongside co-star Dexter Sol Ansell. According to Claffey, the whole rumor came from a misunderstanding after he talked about going up against another actor while auditioning for Dunk. Ansell apparently got that unnamed actor mixed up with Cavill, and fans ran with it from there. Claffey explained, “Dexter mixed up those two people, and he thought that it was Henry Cavill that I had ‘beaten’ to play Dunk, which would never happen anyway. So, that’s what he was saying in New York, and everybody then just assumed that Henry Cavill’s going to be in season 2.” Ansell even leaned into the correction with a joke of his own, saying, “So, anyway, Henry Cavill is... NOT in the second season!” That pretty much closes the door on this one, at least for now. Posts By Macklen Makhloghi Who Would Henry Cavill Play in 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'? The rumor had some traction because Cavill has long been one of the more popular fan-casting choices for the wider Game of Thrones universe, especially for figures like Daemon Blackfyre or even other Targaryen-era roles. So when fans thought they heard a season 2 tease, it fit neatly into something people already wanted to believe. But at this point, there is no indication that Cavill is involved in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The cast of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms includes Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall, Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, and Daniel Ingsas Ser Lyonel Baratheon.
