The Transportation Alternative Program grant covers 80% of project cost.
Funding comes from a Transportation Alternative Program grant that covers 80% of the cost. The total cost of the new section will be just over $1 million.Gulf Shores has spent time and money on roadways and sidewalks along its beachfront over the last decade.
Past tragedies involving pedestrians or cyclists and a growing tourist population prompted the city to redesign the area closest to the public beach, now known as the Waterfront Walking District.Grant Brown, with the city of Gulf Shores, said the project will extend the sidewalk system. “It takes it just past West Lagoon Avenue to 11th Street and depending on how far the money will go, we hope to be able to get it from Beach Boulevard, north to West Lagoon Avenue to create a loop sidewalk system,” Brown said. The project will add about another half-mile of sidewalk. It is in the design phase and could get started later this year.Garrett Hoffman owns Waves convenience store at the corner of West Beach and West 11th Street. He said 25% to 30% of his customers are walking to the store and would like a safer path for them to follow. “I’ve been here, like I said, twenty-five years and I’ve seen some stuff that’s pretty scary, especially at these intersections right here coming across the street. We’ve heard of a couple over the years, some bad stories of people getting hit, things like that so yeah, people…it’s dangerous, especially during the peak season,” Hoffman said. Peak season is approaching. Those walking the roads in Gulf Shores this week welcome a safer way to get around.“I actually think that would be amazing considering that too, it’s kind of a risky thing like I mentioned before, just like walking around. I also feel like you know, the fact that everyone is safe to just like walk and stuff so for me, I think that would be a great idea,” Peterson said.Because the sidewalk will be along a state road and grant money is being used to fund it, the approval process could take several months.“Best case would be this winter getting it done. I don’t think this is something we would try to tackle during spring break or the summer season, so if we can’t get this underway this winter then we’ll probably wait until after Labor Day of ’27 before starting,” Colvin said. The sidewalk will be constructed on the north side of West Beach Boulevard only. It will be separated from the road and the bike lane.Chuck Norris, martial arts master and actor, dies at 86U.S. Marshals arrested a suspected international war criminal in MobileFormer Spring Hill College student sues over mold in campus housing, court documents say 73-year-old Mobile man arrested after allegedly exposing himself, trying to lure children into apartment
