The city is building a temporary lifeguard structure north of the facility until it can find the $2 million needed to repair the existing station.City crews are building a new temporary Mission Beach lifeguard tower and trailer, which will be located on the north side of the station, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

In the meantime, the Mission Beach lifeguard tower — one of the busiest beaches in all of San Diego County — remains open. The city has been building that temporary structure until it can find the $2 million needed for repairs. The temporary facilities are meant to allow lifeguards to continue operating safely while plans to update the existing station are made, SDFD said. Officials expect to finish erecting the temporary structure by Memorial Day in time for the busy summer season. Meanwhile, pedestrian traffic on the boardwalk has been detoured onto the beach on a temporary walkway that has been thrown up on the beach side of the seawall. The temporary facilities will remain in place until a project is finalized to address the existing 40-year-old station. Lifeguards will still have access to the garage and locker rooms in the existing station, SDFD told NBC 7, but all other functions will be run from the tower and trailer.
