The camp stretches out at the intersection of North 87th Street and First Avenue Northwest, on the backside of a Fred Meyer, and spills into Sandel Park.
A growing homeless encampment has returned a year after it was removed in the north Seattle neighborhood of Greenwood, near Fred Meyer and Sandel Park. This photo was taken on Nov. 8, 2023. The city of Seattle cleared away the tents a year ago, but now a new homeless encampment is leading to complaints from residents in north Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood.
Fist fights, uncontrolled fires and daily drug use are among the top concerns for people in the area. There are also issues with needles, propane tanks and discarded furniture littering the side of the road. Neighbors said there have even been instances of people being harassed in the parking lots while going to Fred Meyer or some of the other shops in the area.
Neighbors told KOMO News they have reported the problems to the city but the camp has only gotten bigger. They want action taken to address both the welfare of those who are living outdoors and also restore a sense of safety for the neighborhood. KOMO News reached out to city officials to see what actions might be taken. A spokesperson for the mayor’s office indicated they will be responding soon.
