Officials in a North Carolina county on Monday issued a state of emergency, as well as expanded a burning ban, due to extreme fire risk.The ban went into effect

Crews with the Asheville Fire Department and other emergency personnel responded to an area in North Carolina, where a one-acre brush fire was threatening four homes on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023. The ban went into effect at 12 p.m. in Buncombe County. It included the municipal limits of Asheville, Weaverville, Woodfin, Black Mountain, Montreat, and Biltmore Forest.

Several wildfires have sparked in recent weeks as much of the western part of the state suffers severe drought conditions. As of Monday, the Poplar Fire in Henderson County has burned more than 400 acres and damaged several structures., county officials said embers and small flames are the primary way most homes ignite in wildfires.
