DeWine, 76, will leave office in January 2027 due to term limits.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine talks with reporters in Cedarville, Ohio, May 3, 2022. Gov. DeWine ended Ohio's participation in a federal pandemic unemployment aid program ahead of a government deadline for stopping the payments. Attorneys for the Republican governor argue he had the legal authority to do so. People who lost out on additional benefits says DeWine should have continued them. The Ohio Supreme Court heard arguments from both sides Wednesday, May 25, 2022.

On July 31, DeWine filed two forms: one terminating his state political campaign, and the other disclosing that he repaid the $4 million, using the $4.081 million in campaign money he had left over after he won the November 2022 election, overwhelmingly defeating Democrat Nan Whaley. DeWine had been carrying the $4 million on his campaign’s books for nearly five years, after he initially spent the money to help defeat Democrat Richard Cordray in the November 2018 election, a close race in a strong year nationally for Democrats. But he’s barred by term limits from running for reelection, and must leave office in January 2027.

DeWine, 76, is independently wealthy, thanks to a family business that started in agricultural supplies before branching out into other areas, including owning a minor league baseball team in North Carolina.

It’s legal and common for wealthy political candidates to loan their campaigns money and then tap campaign funds after winning office to repay themselves, although they’re sometimes subject to criticism, including by political contributors who would prefer they spend the money winning elections.
