Gov. Mike Dunleavy speaks highly of Jason Brune who submitted his resignation as DEC commissioner.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On Wednesday, Aug. 2, Jason Brune resigned from his position as the Commissioner of Alaska’s Dept. of Environmental Conservation .

Brune began working for the Dunleavy administration in 2018, beginning his appointment as DEC commissioner of July 1, 2022. Just over a year later, Brune is resigning from the position citing a desire to pursue opportunities in the private sector. Gov. Mike Dunleavy accepted the letter of resignation and spoke highly of Brune’s work as the commissioner. “Commissioner Brune’s tenure in DEC demonstrated his uncanny ability to balance environmental protection with responsible natural resource development,” said Dunleavy. “While I am sorry to see him go, I respect his decision with the knowledge that his outstanding leadership at a new venue will continue to move Alaska forward.

Brune said he was honored to have served with Gov. Dunleavy and the many other commissioners in different state departments. He also spoke highly of his employees and the work they’ve done. “I’m so proud of and grateful for the hard work DEC employees do on a daily basis, in close collaboration with the regulated community, to advance our economy while protecting human health and the environment.”

Brune’s last day as commissioner is Aug. 20. Deputy commissioner Emma Pokon will serve as the acting commissioner until a permanent replacement is selected later this year.

The ruling in this first-of-its- kind trial in the U.S. adds to a small number of legal decisions around the world that have established a government duty to protect citizens from climate change. If it stands, the ruling could set an important legal precedent, though experts said the immediate impacts are limited and state officials pledged to seek to overturn the decision on appeal.
