Michelle Mann FORT NOVOSEL -It was a day to remember military members killed in the line of duty and the families they left behind as military personnel gathered with neighbors from cities surrounding Fort Novosel for the United States Army Aviation Center of Excellence Memorial Day Ceremony Thursday.
Memorial Day originated following the American Civil War as communities gathered to honor the graves of fallen soldiers. First known as Decoration Day, the day expanded to honor all military personnel who died in any conflict and in 1971 was officially designated as a federal holiday. Retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Derrick Rodriguez and his wife Breanne were among nearly two dozen Gold Star family members recognized during Thursday’s ceremony. The retired military man was 10 years old when his father Master Sgt. Elroy Rodriguez, a Special Forces Medical Sergeant assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was killed in the Gulf War Feb. 21, 1991.
“Gold star families: we thank you and honor you for your very personal price that you have paid for our nation. You use that loss to guide you in life and to make you a better person,” McCurry had said in his welcome to the Gold Star families. “Their sacrifice must never be forgotten. We can leverage it as a positive example in our own lives. It should motivate us to be a little better, a little kinder.
