Police are investigating after a man was charged with several kidnapping attempts following an incident at a Sheetz in Marietta on Sunday.
Police are investigating after a man was charged with several kidnapping attempts following an incident at a Sheetz in Marietta after midnight Sunday.
Victims told police that a man in his 40s, later identified as Jared Michael Sweigard, 42, backed up his truck next to their vehicle, attempted to enter it while they were still inside, police wrote in charging documents. According to police, after Sweigard was unsuccessful in his attempt, he continued through the parking lot and approached a group of children, telling one of the girls she had "5 seconds to get in the truck".
After the girl declined, Sweigard left the parking lot and entered a housing development across the street, where he came across a man and a woman walking upstairs to the apartments. Sweigard reportedly pushed the man aside and attempted to grab the woman.He was taken to the police department for questioning, where he reportedly admitted to his actions, and told police he had intended to terrorize the victims.
Sweigard was taken to the Lancaster County Prison, and has been charged with attempted kidnapping, attempted kidnapping of a minor, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, loitering and prowling at night, and harassment.
