A gastrointestinal illness has affected nearly 4.1% of the passengers on the Radiance of the Seas cruise ship. The CDC is investigating the outbreak, which has resulted in the isolation of affected passengers and crew members.

A gastrointestinal illness has spread aboard the Radiance of the Seas cruise ship this week, impacting around 4.1% of its passengers, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ). Of the 2,164 passengers on board the Royal Caribbean International vessel, 89 have been affected, while only two out of the 910 crew members have reported symptoms.

While the specific type of gastrointestinal illness hasn't been determined by the CDC, the predominant symptoms reported include diarrhea and vomiting. The current voyage for the Radiance of the Seas began on February 1st and is scheduled to conclude on Saturday. The outbreak was reported to the CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program on Tuesday. The CDC has stated that affected passengers and crew members have been isolated from the rest of the ship's population. In addition, the ship has implemented increased cleaning and disinfection procedures and is collecting stool specimens for testing. CNN Travel has reached out to Royal Caribbean via email for comment. The Vessel Sanitation Program noted in its report that norovirus is a frequent cause of gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships, but identifying the cause of an outbreak can sometimes be a time-consuming process.Norovirus cases saw a significant surge at the beginning of 2025, making 2024 the worst year in over a decade for stomach bugs on cruise ships. To mitigate the spread of illness, the CDC recommends frequent hand washing, adequate rest, and sufficient hydration.
