GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio - Tensions are rising in Garfield Heights as more teachers resign from the school district. At Monday’s board meeting, 17 teachers called it quits ― along with 4 administrators.
Many say they can no longer handle the brutal student violence and/or lack of support from the administration. At the meeting, former President of Garfield City Council called upon Superintendent Richard Reynolds to address these issues. “Don’t keep the people in suspense, suspense breeds all kinds of ideas, and you know how that goes,” said Mike Nenadovich. Nenadovich and others made reference to information recently uncovered by 19 Investigates, showing chaos in classrooms caught on cell phone cameras and brutal fights happening at every grade level throughout the district. For months, 19 investigates has tried to question Reynolds about these issues. When approached after the meeting adjourned, he didn’t have much to say in response to our reports. When pressed about how he planned to address the situation, school board treasurer Phillip Oko intervened.Teachers and residents spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, hoping Reynolds would provide further insight. Teacher Joan Wanderstock resigned after 44 years with the district. Monday evening she voiced her outrage. “What members of this district did to me was incomprehensible, but what they did to my students was in excusable,” said Wanderstock. Dawn Majors also resigned after teaching for 26 years. She couldn’t attend the meeting but submitted her resignation letter blaming:“the school district’s repeated failure to address these critical issues has severely impacted my ability to maintain a safe and productive learning environment, and left me with no choice but to resign.” According to board meeting minutes, a whopping 72 teachers resigned in 2023, a large spike from previous years. Reynolds says at least 29 have called it quits so far this year. He also noted the district’s efforts to address student conduct. “The number of incidents involving student behavior has actually decreased in the last 12 months, said Reynolds. “Furthermore, some of the reporting that’s been conducted on our district casts a very misleading and unfair shadow on our school system,” said Reynolds.“The fighting has always been like this, sometimes even worse, but now it’s more televised,” said Chloe Doyer. Since May 19 Investigates has questioned Reynolds about these issues, asking if he would or any district official would speak with us. Two weeks ago, he emailed us stating he would consider responding to a list of written questions.'Superman' crews pack up as filming wraps in downtown ClevelandMan claims popular flea and ticket medication killed his dogDirt Bike Dangers: another Cleveland police officer injured by dirt bike rider
