HBO’s fantasy juggernaut Game of Thrones had the world in a chokehold just two seasons in — and it never let go until the very end. Based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga, the series is still widely regarded as one of the greatest shows ever made.
However, its controversial finale cast a shadow over its legacy. The drama built immense anticipation for its finale, but it was a huge letdown that triggered outrage as loud as the praise it once received. Years later, the backlash has lingered, and now one Westerosi alum has weighed in. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Jaime Lannister throughout the show's eight-season run, is the latest cast member to reflect on the finale, and his grounded take may not be what critics want to hear. Several aspects of the finale divided fans, including the deaths of Jaime and Cersei Lannister, who were crushed beneath the collapsing walls of the Red Keep. From his perspective, seeing the hate linger for so long has become rather irritating. The actor shared his reaction during a recent interview with The Independent, saying: "It was expected. How are you ever gonna make an end that’s gonna satisfy everyone? That’s a very difficult thing. I absolutely think people are entitled to whatever opinion they have, but it’s a television show. Someone told you a story and you didn’t like the ending. It’s really annoying, but..." What Have Other 'Game of Thrones' Stars Said About The Finale? In the years since the finale, more Game of Thrones alums have weighed in on the show’s divisive ending. Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow, has admitted he had mixed feelings about both the finale and the backlash it provoked. While he acknowledged that some of the creative choices “didn’t quite work,” he also expressed concern over the intensity of fan reactions, especially when they crossed the line into personal attacks against the cast. “Everyone is entitled to their opinion,” he noted, “but I think there were mistakes made, story-wise, towards the end maybe.” By contrast, other stars have stood firmly by the show’s conclusion. Peter Dinklage, for instance, defended the finale, dismissing the backlash as little more than fans being “angry at us for breaking up with them.” For fans still holding out hope for an alternate ending to Game of Thrones, their best bet lies in George R. R. Martin’s long-awaited Winds of Winter, the next installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. What Martin has shared so far suggests significant deviations from the show, but it still includes familiar plot threads and characters that could lead to a more satisfying conclusion. The only drawback? Readers will have to wait until Martin finally completes the book — a process that certainly isn’t helped when frustrated fans heckle him at public events.
