Franklin County Treasurer Cheryl Brooks Sullivan, who has managed the county's billion-dollar investment portfolio for nearly a decade, is embroiled in a lega

Franklin County Treasurer Cheryl Brooks Sullivan , who has managed the county's billion-dollar investment portfolio for nearly a decade—and is in charge of county property taxes—is now embroiled in a legal battle over her own property.

A lawsuit filed in April 2022 by Freedom Mortgage accuses Brooks Sullivan and her ex-husband of failing to make mortgage payments on their home in Mifflin Township, northeast Columbus. The suit claims they owe $337,000 plus 5% interest. Records indicate the home was purchased in 2018 for $315,000. Brooks Sullivan declined to comment when reached by ABC 6 at her county office, referring inquiries to her attorney, telling ABC 6, "I have to be real careful that I don’t say things that disrupt the concept, and I don't even know what those things are yet."In a counterclaim, Brooks Sullivan's attorney argued, "The foreclosure is the result of incompetence on the part of the plaintiff for a period of nearly three years," while asserting that Brooks Sullivan "exercised every possible effort to resolve the situation." Court documents reveal that following the sudden death of Brooks Sullivan's mother in October 2019, she faced financial strain and sought assistance from the plaintiff to create a mitigation loss plan to avoid foreclosure but was bounced around from representative to representative, failing to get meaningful information about her application. Her attorney claims Brooks Sullivan made timely payments on the mortgage loan from its inception until October 2019. Since the initial lawsuit was filed, the loan has switched to U.S. Bank National Association, which is now listed as the plaintiff. The court has ruled that U.S. Bank National Association can proceed with foreclosure. A jury trial is scheduled for August to determine if the banks made errors in the case, though the outcome is not expected to affect the potential foreclosure.
