A vulgar and racist rant that disrupted a Franklin County Commissioners meeting has prompted significant changes to how the public can participate in future meetings. The incident, which occurred during a public Zoom session, was captured on video and obtained by ABC 6 through a public records request.
The commissioners had initially offered a public Zoom link for meetings during the pandemic to encourage public participation and transparency. However, following this incident, the county has decided to suspend the Zoom option, requiring public participation to be in-person only while the investigation is ongoing. Board President Erica Crawley said the county's IT department, along with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, is investigating the incident. Prosecutors have promised to file charges if and when the individual responsible is identified. It remains unclear how long the investigation will take. The video, which surfaced unexpectedly during a discussion on grants through the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, marks the fourth incident involving racist and antisemitic messages in Columbus in just over a week.
