Four Jamaican nationals have been arrested in connection with a lottery scam that defrauded elderly victims out of over $200,000. Six other suspects remain at large. The FBI is actively involved in the investigation and immigration enforcement.
Four Jamaican nationals accused of stealing over $200,000 from elderly victims remain in custody, while six other suspects are on the loose. On February 7th, the FBI arrested Peter Walcott, Malik Chambers, Romario Nembhard, and Jermaine Smith in Foley. According to an affidavit, the suspects tricked victims into believing they had won a lottery. However, before they could claim their winnings, the victims were told they had to pay “taxes.
” Investigators said the victims shipped the money through FedEx, but the company flagged and intercepted thousands of dollars in cash and checks. That money was then returned to dozens of victims with a warning notice, but not everyone was so fortunate. The federal court document also described Chambers as a legal permanent resident with a visitor visa. However, the document shows Walcott, Smith, and Nembhard are in the United States illegally after overstaying their visas.Parker Still, special agent in charge of the Mobile Division of the FBI, told me a lot of work has gone into this investigation. “From the FBI standpoint, right now, we are actively involved in immigration enforcement as well,” Still said. “We are continuously operating. We’re doing multiple operations daily, basically seven days a week.” Still said they have seen a growing number of people falling for lottery schemes over the years, and talking to the victims makes all the difference. “We take our victims very seriously here,” he said. “We hear how these schemes impact the victims because it becomes very important at court. Many times, they’ll give a victim impact statement or something like that or write a letter to the federal court. Those stories become vital in combating these fraudulent schemes.
