Authorities arrested four current and former Baldwin County residents in relation to a fraudulent lottery scam.
Peter Walcott, Malik Chambers, Romario Nembhard and Jermaine Smith face charges of mail fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.
The men, all Jamaican nationals, received more than $200,000 in more than 100 shipments of cash from victims across the county who had falsely been told they had won a lottery and had to pay “taxes” on their winnings, according to court documents. The victims, many of whom are elderly, were directed to send the “tax” payments to fictitious names at addresses controlled by the defendants, court documents revealed.
If convicted, the men could face a maximum of 20 years in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Alabama.
