Ex-President Evo Morales is accused of committing crimes against a minor during his time in office.

Morales , 65, a former socialist president of Bolivia who ruled for four terms from 2006 to 2019, is facing accusations of human trafficking and statutory rape . Morales bypassed the two-term limit established by the Bolivian constitution through questionable court rulings. He is currently involved in a power struggle against his former protégé, President Luis Arce.

Local prosecutors reactivated an investigation against Morales in September 2023, based on evidence found in the southern city of Tarija that suggests Morales had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl named Cindy Vargas in 2016. Vargas gave birth to a child at age 16, and authorities recently discovered a birth certificate listing Morales as the father. Morales has refused to appear for questioning, leading to an arrest warrant being issued against him. Idelsa Pozo Saavedra, Vargas’ mother, is also being investigated for allegedly facilitating the relationship in exchange for political and other benefits. Vargas’ father is currently in preemptive detention
