Evo Morales, the former socialist president of Bolivia, faces arrest for alleged statutory rape and human trafficking. Prosecutors accuse him of a sexual relationship with a minor during his presidency.
Morales, 65, a former socialist dictator who ruled Bolivia for four terms from 2006 to 2019, is facing renewed legal challenges. Morales, who bypassed the two-term constitutional limit through questionable court rulings, is currently engaged in a power struggle with his successor, President Luis Arce. Recent months have seen local prosecutors revive a long-dormant investigation against Morales, accusing him of human trafficking and statutory rape alleged to have occurred during his presidency.
Evidence uncovered in Tarija indicates Morales had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, Cindy Vargas, in 2016. Vargas subsequently gave birth to a child at age 16. Authorities discovered a birth certificate listing Morales as the father. An arrest warrant was issued against Morales and Vargas' mother, Idelsa Pozo Saavedra, for allegedly facilitating the relationship in exchange for political and other advantages. Vargas' father is currently detained
